You've Got to be Kidding

Sen. Arlen Specter wants the President to delay announcing Sandra Day O'Connor's replacement until the middle of 2006?!

With friends like these...

Update: Harry Reid has said that "The President is not entitled to very much deference in staffing the third branch of government, the judiciary." The Washington Post, to its credit, has criticized Reid's words as "dangerous."

Do you remember a few months ago, right after Justice O'Connor issued her resignation letter? There was all those predictions and all the speculation that Chief Justice Rehnquist was going to step-down?

It was the very same Sen. Arlen Specter who recommended that Pres. Bush nominate Justice O'Connor for Chief Justice, because, he claimed, she would probably stay another year for that.

Huh? She had already resigned. Rehnquist had NOT resigned. But Specter's solution was to promote her to his position for one year! Specter either has something for Justice O’Connor—he sure wants to keep her around—or he has something for the year 2006. Either way, you have to wonder what’s in his head!

I agree! It strikes me as very inappropriate that Specter went to her directly and asked her if she'd stay on another year. I strongly feel that Justice O'Connor should put an end to speculation and game playing and simply resign effective immediately, rather than conditional on the confirmation of her successor. It's pointless for her to hear cases this fall if she won't be around in the spring, anyway, as she won't be able to participate in those opinions.

It's great to have you here! :)
