Sweet Treats

The Washington Post has published an extensive cookie baking guide which is sure to put anyone in the mood to bake Christmas cookies this weekend.

Then pay a visit to the New York Times food section, which has an interesting article on various kinds of sugar.

Most years my husband tries out a new fudge recipe at Christmastime, in on ongoing quest to find the perfect fudge. He's thinking of trying the recipe in the 1997 JOY OF COOKING this year. If anyone has other fudge recipe candidates, please post them! His only "requirements" are that the ingredients cannot include melted chocolate chips or marshmallow fluff. :)

Well, he won't like my suggestion but it is the best I've ever eaten.

Thank you! Maybe I can convince him to try it. He's had a poor experience in the past with melted chocolate chips -- the recipe turned out pretty much like one big chocolate chip (grin) -- but that was a number of years ago. Perhaps your recommendation will lead him to give this one a try! :) I love the Cooking for Engineers website.

Best wishes, Laura

Oh, these don't taste anything like a big chocolate chip; they are very melt-in-your-mouth-ish. Had you been to Cooking for Engineers before? They also have a tasty homemade marshmallow recipe.

I've been to Cooking for Engineers -- loved a writeup they did on making cornbread from the recipe on the box! -- but not checked out their dessert recipes yet. Thanks for the additional feedback on that recipe! If it turns out "fudgy" and not like one big blob of chocolate chip, LOL, that sounds good!! (We love chocolate chips, but he wanted fudge to have a fudge consistency, grin.)

I'm making a batch each of chocolate and peanut butter fudge tonight for H's work potluck tomorrow. When D went for "Take your child to Work" Day this year, she found out that this fudge has become legendary in H's office. H gets frequent requests to bring more. I almost feel like a cheat as this fudge is just so easy to make.
